On a scale of 1-10, how committed are you to fighting your sin? Non-Christians have very little reasons to serve or honour God by fleeing sin. They may however see the negative effects of particular sins, and conclude their lives would be better without them. The average Christian knows they are to cut sin out of their lives. Yet often our hearts are just not into fighting particular sins, because we secretly enjoy them too much. So what can we do? There is a direct correlation in the Bible between a person’s view of God and their view of sin. Ps 36:1 tells us the wicked (the non-believer) has ‘no fear of God before his eyes’. They neither see God as he is, nor do they want to. The next verse tells us the wicked are too proud to even detect their sin. At the other end of the scale are those who find themselves in the direct presence of God. When Isaiah is taken into the throne room of God (Isaiah 6), he cries out ‘I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips’. Being confronted with the infinite holiness of God immediately leads him to lament just how sinful he is. Thus the clearer a view we have of God, the clearer a view we have of our sin, and the greater our desire to rid our lives of it. So, if your heart is playing catch-up to your head, which is telling you to rip certain habitual sins from your life, start with the prayer from the newssheet 2 weeks ago. Pray that God will make you want to want more God. Then pray the prayer from last week’s newssheet; that I will want to see you more clearly. After those two prayers, all that’s left is to start looking at God. The more we read God’s word, and meditate on it, the greater our desire to fight sin will be.
